Gen Z 101

Wikipedia defines Generation Z or Gen Z for short, as the demographic cohort succeeding Millennials and preceding Generation Alpha.

Now, wait a minute, I think I’ll have to Google a bunch of words used above (yeah, my English teacher is not going to be proud of me).

You know what, scratch that, let’s start again!

Who is Gen Z?

A million-dollar question. Maybe that’s why everybody on the internet keeps asking about it.

Why?

Because we’re hot right now; we’re the new species in the zoo! According to the Redefining Authority: understanding the needs of Gen Z report by Flamingo, we account for at least 32% of the global population. And everybody wants to break our mysterious aura to find out who we really are.

Well, we, the Gen Z, are known by a lot of different names: iGen, centennials, zoomers, oh, and the recently added social justice warriors! Born between 1997 to 2012, we’re often stereotyped as tech-addicted, anti-social, or just “too woke”.

But in reality, we’re just like any other generation. Or are we? Lol.

Well, we’re not the same bruh!

And here’s why.

Gen Z: The First Digital Natives

We were born in a drastically different world. From eating while YouTube played in the background to maintaining a Snapchat streak with our best friend, we grew up!

We became the native users of technology unlike our brothers from other mothers, Millennials, who travelled from the physical world to the digital one and adapted.

Being the generation which perceives technology as empowering, it is not surprising that we spend an average of at least 8 hours per day online according to the Isobar-Ipsos #MeetTheZ Survey. 80% of us can always be found on Instagram, 57% on YouTube and you know the rest of the drill: WhatsApp, Snapchat and then Twitter.

But the real question that everybody should be asking is not who we are but what we want.

What does Gen Z want?

We want the best that the world has to offer. Call us materialistic if you must, but the best of brands as well. It’s true we’re a generation that prefers iPhones, Nike shoes and H&M clothes. But we’re also beyond that.

On a normal day, we just want to chill, find some good memes or receive a text back from our Tinder match. But on days we feel deeper, we rally behind movements to create inclusive work cultures, legalise same-sex marriages or demand governments and corporations do better in the fight against climate change.

Our search for finer experiences is never-ending. And that’s why we believe in things (brands, causes, ideals all alike) that gratify the expression of individual identity.

So to answer your question, we being our casual, social, vocal and brand-conscious self, just want the simplest things: communication, transparency, accountability and more. One thing we do not appreciate is being spun or lied to (not even for our “own good”).

Now I’m going to resist the urge to say ‘mic drop’ here and just sum it up.

Gen Z is a term that can never be truly defined because labels are just so last year.

At one point we’re the proud Instagram-generation who can turn making reels into a career. And other times we’re not scared to actually step out in the real world and work to bring a change.
